I just received word to be in prayer for the family of Sam Dixon, the head of UMCOR, pastor, and missionary who was in Haiti, deemed missing and then declared found in the rubble of Hotel Montana.
The Rev. Sam Dixon dies before rescue from hotel ruins in Haiti
(following released by General Board of Global Ministries Saturday afternoon)
New York, NY, Jan. 16, 2010—The Rev. Dr. Sam Dixon, head of the humanitarian relief agency of The United Methodist Church, died before he could be rescued from the rubble of a hotel destroyed by the earthquake that hit Haiti on January 12.
Dixon was reportedly alive in the hotel ruins on the morning of January 15. Confirmation of his death before rescue was conveyed to Global Ministries through several sources, including eyewitnesses from a Methodist guest house in Port-au-Prince, where Dixon and his colleagues had been staying. Frequent press reports throughout the day on January 15 asserting his safety were incorrect.
In a separate event unrelated to Haiti but sharing equally in the pain of human tragedy and suffering – our frequent guest blogger & my fellow colleague, Dr. Khalsa, has asked me to post a prayer chain request.
Heather, a young woman and breast cancer patient, has requested that everyone “pray for her” as she starts treatment for metastatic breast cancer.
In a response to Heather’s request, I think it most appropriate to post Dr. Khalsa’s “Inhale Radiance” meditation, that she posted on You Tube for Heather today.
Please, everyone – pray for Heather and all women like her that are fighting breast cancer. Pray for the victims of the Haiti earthquake and all of those affected – whether trapped in buildings, rescuers and aid workers responding as quickly as possible, or the families of those who have perished, like Rev. Sam Dixon – who gave his life willingly and sacrificially for the good of humankind.
Watch Dr. Khalsa’s “Inhale Radiance” meditation, and allow it to guide you in prayers for all those in need.
