Module 15 is the concluding on-site course.  Module 15 covers Ayurveda for the medical professional, and provides the student with templates for Ayurvedic evaluation and prescription, within the scope of practice of the Professional Yoga Therapist.  Module 15 also covers facets of sound and its use during therapy, including vocal production, preservation, and music labs.

Module 15 covers the advanced clinical practice and prescription of yoga postures inversions and semi-inversions. Through evidence based methodology, inversions in yoga have evolved in the PYT system.  Clinicians will be evaluating and prescribing MTY programs for bothpathophysiology and prevention of injury and disease in complex patient populations.  Special sections in Chapter 5, the required reading that accompanies this module, also address gender specific methods for teaching inversions, something not yet addressed in traditional or modern yoga literature.

Module 15 covers Ayurveda as it can be used by the health care professional in medical therapeutic yoga evaluation and application.  Chapters 1 and 2 of PYT Volume IV prepare the clinician to incorporate fundamentals ofAyurveda into their clinical and community based (pathophysiological and preventive, respectively) practice, learning how to apply Ayurveda as yogicmedicine through individual constitutional ordoshic analysis.  The clinician will learn how to incorporate use of the doshic analysis into the broader conceptual model in order to complete the entire PYT holistic evaluation and management paradigm.

Clinical Objectives

Note: Clinical Objectives for Module 13, as well as tuition for Module 13, are covered under Module 15.

  1. Learn advanced posture modification based on pathophysiology and prevention.
  2. Add approximately 30 new postures and breathing techniques to your therapeutic yoga toolbox.
  3. Apply biomechanics of inversions, including headstands and shoulderstands to evolve all inversions in yoga.
  4. Demonstrate understanding of teaching inversions and contraindications which would preclude practice of them.
  5. Cultivate an understanding of the importance of vocal quality and the use of music during therapy.
  6. Apply principles of the science of Ayurveda which are congruent with the evidence base in order to more accurately prescribe yoga postures and breathing.
  7. Study individualized plan development for one on one sessions and for group based therapy.
  8. Describe music as a therapeutic modality for special and general populations.
  9. Study the relationship between acupressure, marma point therapy (Indian acupressure), and conventional soft tissue mobilization techniques.
  10. Demonstrate use of manual therapy and biofeedback techniques during yoga postures to facilitate improve patient outcomes.
  11. Compare and contrast the traditional method and cultural context of teaching inversions with the evidence based PYT methodology used for teaching inversions.
  12. Identify indications and contraindications for teaching different types and progressions of headstands and shoulderstands taught in the PYT method for use in prevention and management of pathophysiology.
  13. Understand the evidence based PYT method for utilization of inversions as both diagnostic and therapeutic modalities for spinal health in both community and clinic based medical yoga programs.
  14. Explain the interrelationship between the temperomandibular joint and the spine and how it can be affected by inversions.
  15. Identify musculoskeletal physiology and biomechanics of trunk, upper, and lower limb involvement required for safe execution and stabilization of inversions.
  16. Learn specific sequencing and postural progression(s) for teaching inversions with gender sensitivity and specificity.
  17. Identify compensatory neuromuscular, musculoskeletal, and psychophysiological patterns which could impair safe performance of inversions using the PYT methodology.
  18. Identify systemic benefits and potential risks of utilizing inversions in clinical and community based yoga programs.
  19. Compare and contrast gender specific and non-gender specific programming for utilizing inversions therapeutically in men’s and women’s health.
  20. Verbalize the importance of including Ayurveda in prescribing medical therapeutic yoga based on how it impacts the PYT conceptual model of holistic intervention.
  21. Explain the scientific interrelationship of yoga and Ayurveda with western medicine in managing chronic diseases.
  22. Understand the five element theory, the guiding precepts of Ayurveda , and the governing non-theistic cosmic and physiological philosophy of its practice that overlap with modern neuroanatomy, psychophysiology, and nutrition.
  23. Demonstrate understanding of basic Ayurvedic nutritional guidelines for each type of constitution and how it affects five element balance.
  24. Practically apply the inter-relationship between the universal structure in eastern/Ayurvedic medicine to kinesthetic awareness and body intelligence in western/rehabilitative medicine.
  25. Compare and contrast constitutional examination versus disease examination and the need for each in a modern holistic medical model.
  26. Identify the internal and external influences affecting each individual constitutional type in order to understand their biochemical, psychophysiological, and psychoemotional metabolic effects.
  27. Identify a minimum of five signs and symptoms of both excess and balance in each type of constitution.
  28. Utilize the five element theory of Ayurveda to affect change in each facet of the conceptual model to improve overall patient outcomes.
  29. Identify the elements present in each of the three major Ayurvedic constitutions and how their state of balance or imbalance affects each limb of the conceptual model.
  30. Utilize the mental and intellectual Ayurvedic qualities of the individual to create comprehensive individualized treatment plans in medical therapeutic yoga.
  31. Integrate your knowledge of the five precepts of Ayurvedic practice and the 9 methods of intervention for Professional Yoga Therapists in order to prescribe medical therapeutic yoga for each constitutional type.
  32. Compare and contrast the constitution (tri-dosha) types in order to understand how each requires different intervention for conceptual model balance.
  33. Distinguish the difference between the translation, location, elemental makeup, and mental qualities of each constitution.
  34. Demonstrate understanding of the 10 Ayurvedic constitutions and their respective  parameters through identification of at least 15 methods for intervention in order to improve decision making in medical therapeutic yoga prescription and facilitate work/life balance and overall health and well being.
  35. Identify upper extremity Ayurveda pressure and massage points for soft tissue mobilization, biofeedback, and manual therapy.
  36. Verbalize constitutional differences in physical attributes, anatomical structure, physiology, common orthopaedic presentation,  gastrointestinal function, and receptive and expressive language to understand how they affect prevention of disease in Ayurveda.

  • The digital course manual contains excerpts from the Professional Yoga Therapy Volume III E-Book which provides approximately 200 photographs, illustrations, graphs, and tables to assist in patient prescription and program planning.  Topics include Arthrokinematics & Biomechanical Analysis of Inversions, Ayurvedic Analysis and Program Planning, Templates for Patient Evaluation, Prescription, and Program Planning, and Integrative Medicine Tools for your Toolbox (Chromotherapy, Chakra Therapy, Ayurvedic Analysis, Energy Anatomy & Physiology Analysis & Management (Pelvic Floor & Yogic Lock System)).  The manual is the fourth level and progression companion to PYT Volumes I, II, and III and corresponds to distance learning Modules 11 and 12.
